This reproduction of an early, richly decorated ketubah from Livorno, Italy, dating back to 1698, offers a stunning window into Jewish art and tradition. Lovingly printed on archival fine art paper, our reproduction includes a custom text insert, replacing the original. The ketubah's design features a panoramic illustration of Jerusalem, surrounded by six medallions, each portraying verses from Psalm 128, a psalm traditionally sung at Italian weddings. The intricate border contains twenty-four unique vignettes, with twelve emblems representing the twelve tribes of Israel, each paired with its corresponding zodiac sign, symbolizing cosmic order. Also included are scenes of the four Aristotelian elements—Water, Earth, Wind, and Fire—alongside the four seasons and senses. This artwork represents one of the earliest pairings in Jewish art of tribal emblems and zodiac symbols, showcasing a profound knowledge of Jewish and classical sources. Originally crafted through copperplate engraving and hand-coloring, this design exemplifies the sophistication of seventeenth-century Jewish artisans in Italy.
